Al's blunt to-the-point ways are at odds with his friend Jon's insecure self-doubting personality, but they are friends. Al believes he knows best for Jon, and in a way he does, except that Jon isn't quite capable of being up for it.
ARTIST COMMENT:
Another character from "A Heart Made of Glass", Al was used as the foil, to show how Jon reacts to the outside world. Whereas Al has a healthy personality, Jon doesn't, and on some level Jon knows this and attempts to win Al's approval, whether it be dumping a perceived bad girlfriend based on what Al says to having a one-night stand when he can barely function.
Al is based on a friend Alfred in personality even though he looks quite different. Alfred is a wise thoughtful man who is always able to see the situation as it really is.
